The Call That Changed Everything

Claire didn’t call a divorce lawyer. Not yet. Instead, she dialed a number she knew by heart—the direct line to Arthur Vance, the Chief Executive Officer of the global logistics company where Ryan worked. Arthur wasn’t just Ryan’s boss; he was Claire’s godfather, and her construction firm was their largest corporate client.

As the phone rang, Ryan reached out, his hand trembling. “Claire, please, hang up. Let me explain. It’s not what it looks like—”

“Hello, Arthur?” Claire’s voice was smooth, cutting through Ryan’s desperate whispers. “It’s Claire. I’m currently on Flight 405 to Denver. I’m looking right at Ryan and his secretary, Chloe. It seems Ryan has been using the company’s regional expansion budget to fund their romantic getaways. Yes… including the ‘crucial client meeting’ in Seattle last December.”

The Corporate Guillotine: In the business world, perception is reality. But when fraud enters the mix, the end comes fast.

On the other end of the line, the silence was deafening, followed by Arthur’s deeply disappointed sigh. Ryan watched in sheer horror as Claire calmly explained how Ryan had been approving Chloe’s first-class upgrades using corporate travel points.

“Consider it handled, Claire,” Arthur said grimly. “Enjoy your flight.”

Claire hung up, gave the panicked couple one last, pitying look, and turned on her heel. She walked back to row 14, sat down in her window seat, and fastened her seatbelt.

Moments later, the plane’s in-flight Wi-Fi activated. Ryan’s phone immediately began to buzz violently with notifications that would completely dismantle his career before the plane even crossed the state line.
