We’re All Just Passing Through

grocery store. The owner is Ali, a Moroccan Muslim. His neighbor is Sarah, an American Christian.Every day at 6 AM they meet in front of the store. They don’t talk much. Ali opens the door, Sarah sweeps the sidewalk. Just a greeting and a smile. One winter, a heavy snowstorm hit, and the power was out for 3 days. People stayed home. Ali opened the store without lights and gave bread and milk for free to those who had nothing. Sarah brought her generator to keep the fridge running so the food wouldn’t spoil.Someone asked them: “Why do you help each other when you’re so different?”Ali said: “Because hunger doesn’t know religion.”

Sarah said: “And because cold doesn’t ask about your color.”Since that day, every Friday they give out free coffee in front of the store. Moroccans, Mexicans, Americans… they sit together. They don’t talk about politics. They talk about the weather, the kids, life. This is the America you don’t see on the news.

Ordinary people coexisting, simply because… they have no other choice but to live well together. If you see someone different from you today, just give them a smile. Coexistence starts right there.
