Driving license renewal: how often should it be done and what changes with age?

In Italy, there is no maximum age beyond which driving is prohibited. The ability to continue driving depends on a person’s physical and mental fitness, as determined by a medical examination.

As you get older, however, the validity of your driving licence shortens and checks become more frequent.

Validity of the B driving licence based on age

For the B license, used for cars and light motorcycles, the validity is generally as follows:

  • Up to 50 years: renewal every 10 years
  • From 50 to 70 years: renewal every 5 years
  • From 70 to 80 years: renewal every 3 years
  • Over 80 years: renewal every 2 years

The actual duration may be reduced by the doctor if there are particular health conditions that require more frequent checks.

The medical examination is mandatory

At each renewal, you must undergo a medical examination to verify your fitness to drive.

During the visit the following are generally checked:

  • vision;
  • hearing ability;
  • general psychophysical conditions;
  • any pathologies that could affect driving safety.

In some cases, the doctor may request further specialist tests.

Generally required documentsGenerally required documents

For renewal, the following may be required:

  • valid identity document;
  • health card;
  • expiring or expired license;
  • recent photograph, if requested by the facility;
  • additional medical documentation in case of particular pathologies.

Many procedures are now managed directly by the facility carrying out the visit.

Where can you renew your driving license?

Renewal can be done at:

  • ASL;
  • authorized medical practices;
  • driving schools;
  • authorized automotive registration agencies.

Many facilities offer a comprehensive service that includes a medical examination, photography, and electronic submission of the application.

How much does the renewal cost?

The cost may vary depending on the structure chosen and the services included.

It generally includes:

  • medical visit;
  • administrative rights provided for by the legislation;
  • any costs for managing the practice.

For this reason, the final price may differ significantly from one property to another.

Can you drive after 80?

Yes. In Italy there is no maximum age limit for holding a category B driving license.

Even after the age of 80, it is possible to continue driving, provided the driver passes the medical examination and is deemed fit to drive.

The aim of periodic checks is to ensure the safety of both the driver and other road users.

In summary

  • Up to 50 years: renewal every 10 years.
  • From 50 to 70 years: renewal every 5 years.
  • From 70 to 80 years: renewal every 3 years.
  • Over 80 years: renewal every 2 years.

Age alone does not prevent you from driving: what matters is maintaining the physical and mental health requirements required by law.
