John Candy Made Everyone on Set Feel Like They Mattered.

John Candy Made Everyone on Set Feel Like They Mattered.

John Candy’s warmth was not something he switched on when the cameras rolled. According to stories shared over the years by people who worked around him, it showed up in the small moments between takes.

During the bitter winter shoot of Planes, Trains and Automobiles in 1987, Candy was said to spend breaks outside with the crew instead of disappearing into a heated trailer. He talked with people, kept spirits up, and made sure there was hot coffee when the catering supply was not cutting it.

On Uncle Buck in 1989, another story has him noticing younger crew members living on vending-machine food while the leads were being fed properly. Candy reportedly paid for a food truck himself so everyone could have a hot meal.

That same instinct carried into Only the Lonely. Chris Columbus later remembered Candy as someone who made a point of knowing people by name. He greeted crew members, thanked them, and noticed the people who were easy to overlook. Birthd
