My son found this in our garden… and now we’re wondering what this strange thing is. Do you recognize what’s in the photo?

A simple rusty object can awaken an entire childhood. When I found this small metal object in the garden, I didn’t think it would bring back so many memories and an entire era.

Sometimes, all it takes is a rusty object found in a garden to bring back memories I thought were long forgotten. That’s exactly what happened to me when I stumbled upon this strange little metal object with a wheel and a wire. Many young people don’t know what it is, but for a whole generation, it was a true symbol of freedom and adventure. And if you grew up before electric bikes and LED lights, you’ll probably recognize this object immediately.

This strange object found in the garden wasn’t what I thought it was.

When I first saw this object, I thought it was an old machine part, a broken tool, or even a piece of a toy. Yet, it was actually an old bicycle dynamo.

Back in the day, before rechargeable lamps and modern lights, bicycles used this little device to generate electricity and power the headlight. No batteries, no power pack, nothing to recharge: you just had to pedal.

It was simple, ingenious, and almost magical when I was a child.

How did this bicycle dynamo work?

The dynamo was attached to the bicycle frame, right next to the wheel. A small roller rested against the tire. When you pedaled, the wheel turned, the roller turned too, and this produced electricity.

This electricity directly powered the bicycle light. The faster you pedaled, the brighter the light. When you stopped, the light went out.

The characteristic little sound of the dynamo against the wheel was almost part of the ride, and I still remember it today.

An object that reminds me of childhood and freedom

For me, the bicycle dynamo wasn’t just an accessory. It was almost a magical object. Having a bicycle with a dynamo was a bit like having a grown-up’s bike.

I could ride at night, see the road ahead, feel independent, and go on adventures with my friends. The beam of light on the road made you feel like you were on a grand adventure, even just riding around the block.

It was a time when things were simpler: no screens, no batteries to recharge, just a bicycle, a road, and the desire to explore.

Why you hardly ever see them today

Today, these dynamos have almost disappeared. They’ve been replaced by rechargeable LED lights, which are much more powerful and practical. Modern dynamos integrated into the wheels still exist, but the old dynamos with the small roller have become rare.

Yet they remain a symbol of ingenuity: producing light simply by pedaling, without external power, just with movement.

Back then, people didn’t talk about ecology or renewable energy, but ultimately, this system was already an example of clean and self-sufficient energy.

A small object, but so many memories
What fascinates me is that such a small object can hold so many memories. For me, it’s the memory of walks to school, evening strolls in the summer, my first bicycle, and my first feeling of freedom.

It’s often like that: the simplest objects are the ones that remind us of so much. An old dynamo, an old toy, a schoolbook, and suddenly a whole era comes flooding back.

When objects tell stories
When my child found this object in the garden and asked me what it was, it wasn’t just an opportunity to explain what a dynamo was used for. It was also an opportunity to talk about how things used to be, how we lived, how we played, and how we grew up.

Because, deep down, some objects aren’t just objects: they are memories, stories, and pieces of childhood hidden in slightly rusty metal.
